কর্মপরিধি : টিভি চ্যানেলগুলোর স্যাটেলাইট সেবা নিশ্চিত করাই বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইটের প্রধান কাজ। এর সাহায্যে চালু করা যাবে ডিটিএইচ বা ডিরেক্ট টু হোম ডিশ সার্ভিস।
এছাড়া যেসব জায়গায় অপটিক কেবল বা সাবমেরিন কেবল পৌঁছায়নি সেসব জায়গায় এ স্যাটেলাইটের সাহায্যে নিশ্চিত হতে পারে ইন্টারনেট সংযোগ।
স্যাটেলাইটের ফুটপ্রিন্ট : বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইটের অবস্থান ১১৯.১ ডিগ্রী পূর্ব দ্রাঘিমার কক্ষপথে। এর ফুটপ্রিন্ট বা কভারেজ হবে ইন্দোনেশিয়া থেকে তাজিকিস্তান পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত।
শক্তিশালী কেইউ ও সি ব্যান্ডের মাধ্যমে এটি সবচেয়ে ভালো কাভার করবে পুরো বাংলাদেশ, সার্কভুক্ত দেশসমূহ, ফিলিপাইন এবং ইন্দোনেশিয়া।
স্যাটেলাইট অপারেশন : আর্থ স্টেশন থেকে ৩৫ হাজার ৭৮৬ কিলোমিটার পথ পাড়ি দিয়ে স্যাটেলাইটটির কক্ষপথে যেতে সময় লাগবে ৮-১১ দিন। আর পুরোপুরি কাজের জন্য প্রস্তুত হবে ৩ মাসের মধ্যে।
এরপর প্রথম ৩ বছর থ্যালাস অ্যালেনিয়ার সহায়তায় এটির দেখভাল করবে বাংলাদেশ। পরে পুরোপুরি বাংলাদেশি প্রকৌশলীদের হাতেই গাজীপুর ও রাঙামাটির বেতবুনিয়া আর্থ স্টেশন থেকে নিয়ন্ত্রিত হবে এটি।
স্যাটেলাইট নির্মাণ : ৩.৭ টন ওজনের বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইটটির ডিজাইন। এটা তৈরি করেছে ফ্রান্সের কোম্পানি থ্যালাস অ্যালেনিয়া স্পেস। আর যে রকেট এটাকে মহাকাশে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে সেটি বানিয়েছে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের স্পেসএক্স।
উৎক্ষেপণ হচ্ছে ফ্লোরিডার লঞ্চপ্যাড থেকে।
বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইটের ৪০টি ট্রান্সপন্ডার রয়েছে। এর মধ্যে ২০ দেশে ব্যবহারের জন্য এবং ২০টি ভাড়া দিয়ে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা আয় সম্ভব। এ ছাড়া নিজস্ব স্যাটেলাইট থাকায় বৈশ্বিক টেলিযোগাযোগের ক্ষেত্রে পরনির্ভরশীলতার অবসান হবে। টেলিমেডিসিন, ই-লার্নিং, ই-গবেষণা, ভিডিও কনফারেন্স, প্রতিরক্ষা ও দুর্যোগপূর্ণ অবস্থায় জরুরি যোগাযোগের ক্ষেত্রেও ভূমিকা রাখবে বঙ্গবন্ধু স্যাটেলাইট-১।
